WebSegy is a free online service for geological body extraction from 3D raster data.

WebSegy is based on PPResearch GeoWrap application. The input is SEG-Y file with respective inline, crossline, xoffset and yoffset positions in the SEG-Y Trace header.

Hint: Creating a SEG-Y histogram with WebSegy will help better understanding the uploaded data. Based on this findings are chosen:

  • Level for the extraction.
  • 3D filter sequence.
  • With the described parameters, an initial levelset extraction is ready to begin.

The resulting mesh (initial tessellation ) contains several triangles per original cube, is often characterized with big number of small triangles with poor ratio. Smaller inclusions can be eliminated at will. A mesh optimization step is highly recommended. The simplified algorithm of extracting and optimizing geo-body is described in presentation about surface mesh extraction .

Optimized mesh is ready for FEM computations, and can be directly used to build simulation models. It can later, based on numerical results, be refined as needed.
